Arizona lawmaker defends immigration law in Senate: Ahead of the Supreme Court hearing opening arguments on SB1070, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearingon the constitutionality of Arizona’s papers please immigration law.”The constitutionality of Arizona’s law cracking down on illegal immigrants will be considered in the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday morning. But first came the politics. Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer held a Senate hearing this morning to challenge the legality and rationale behind Arizona’s SB 1070. Much of the hearing was spent questioning the author of the law, Russell Pearce, the former Arizona state Senate president who was recalled in a November election.”

Democrats plan to force vote on Arizona immigration law if it’s upheld by court: At the hearing Senator Charles Schumer revealed that Democrats would be scheduling a vote to overturn Arizona’s state passed law. “Senate Democrats are making plans to force a floor vote on legislation that would invalidate Arizona’s controversial immigration statute if the Supreme Court upholds the law this summer. Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) will announce the fallback legislation at a hearing on the Arizona law Tuesday, a day before the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in a suit to determine whether Arizona had the authority to enact the 2010 state crackdown. The legislation would have little chance of passing in a stalemated Senate or being approved by a GOP-held House, but it would allow Democrats to push their electoral advantage with Latino voters just as the presidential campaign heats up in July.”

Russell Pearce: I ‘Absolutely’ Believe Romney Called SB 1070 A ‘Model’: Finally Russell Pearce, the architect and only politician in the history of Arizona to ever be recalled has said that he thinks Mitt Romney was talking about Sb1070 when he cited Arizona as a model for the country. “Former Arizona State Sen. Russell Pearce, a Republican behind the state’s contested immigration law, SB 1070, said on Tuesday he “absolutely” believed Mitt Romney had endorsed the law as a model for the country. “The folks that he’s said [are] his advisers on this, I have worked with for years and have great confidence and trust in them,” Pearce told reporters after a Senate subcommittee hearing on the immigration law. “I know Romney is a compassionate man, most of us, I’d like to think, are. But I think he also understands the crisis and the damage to this republic and the need to enforce our law.”
